turkey's unemployment rate declined in the April to June period compared to a year ago, while consumer confidence declined slightly in June, figures showed on Monday.
The Turkish Statistical Institute said the unemployment rate fell to 11% from 13.6% in the same period a year ago. The number of unemployed persons decreased by 536,000 compared to the same period of the previous year to 2.8 million.
The urban unemployment rate fell to 13.4%, while the rural unemployment rate fell to 6.4%. Nine out of 10 of those registered unemployed had worked previously.
At the same time, the number of employed persons increased by 1.6 million to 23.6 million. Agricultural employment increased by 423,000 and non-agricultural employment increased by 1.2 million.
The labor force participation rate climbed to 49.4% in the April to June period from 48.2% a year ago. Some 17% of the total labor force were under the age of 25.
Separately, the statistical office said Turkish consumer confidence declined slightly in July due to a deterioration in consumers' assessments concerning their buying time conditions of durable periods.
The consumer confidence index fell to 87.5 in July from 88.0 in the previous month. An index score below 100 means pessimists outnumber optimists.
Turkey has seen strong economic growth after it averted an economic collapse in 2002 by agreeing a strict recovery program with the International Monetary Fund. Since then, inflation has fallen rapidly, although unemployment and foreign debt remain major problems.
The Turkish economy expanded 11.7% annually between January and March, the strongest pace of growth in nearly six years. But the central bank has kept interest rates at low levels, citing uncertainty in the global economy and high unemployment.
